WHAT IS AN E-BOOK? An e-book is a program you can download and store on your computer. Once downloaded you do not need to be connected to the internet to view the information in the e-book. When you run the program the e-book opens in a familiar web browser type format allowing you to navigate through the pages with ease. It is ideal for students who are going to study at sea where they may not have access to the internet, as well as being a convenient way to store the information for easy access on a laptop or desktop computer.
To download a small sample e-book click the icon below. Choose a location on your hard drive to save the book to (e.g. "c:/my ebooks"). You must have Internet Explorer installed to view the book.
To open the book, either navigate to the folder to where you have saved the ebook and double click the file icon, or click on "START, RUN" and type in the file location (e.g. "c:/my ebooks/samplebook.exe"). You will be offered the option of placing a shortcut icon on the desktop from which you can open the e-book in future.
HOW MUCH DO THEY COST? The cost of each book is clearly displayed next to its download link. They are very reasonably priced and because they are organised into modules, you can choose the subjects you wish to download. Once the book is downloaded, there are sample pages which you will be able to view. To open up the whole book you will have to pay the fee and enter a password the first time you use the book. Full instructions are given in the start page of the e-book. With e-books at your fingertips you are just a couple of mouse clicks away from finding out all you need to know to become a Second or Chief Engineer. ISN'T THE INFORMATION THE SAME AS I CAN FIND ON THE WEBSITE? The information in the e-book is a lot more detailed. It is specifically aimed at giving you the information you need to pass the certificates of competency. Exam type sketches are included along with detailed explanations and photographs and drawings. At the end of each e-book are the exam questions from the past 6 years on the subject matter in the book. CAN I INSTALL THE E-BOOK ON MORE THAN ONE COMPUTER? You can install the e-book on more than one computer. However the password is specific to each computer and you will have to pay a separate fee for each computer you want to view the e-book on.
